A nivel fisiológico, el descenso de los niveles de oxígeno en la sangre durante la hipoxia nocturna, aumentan la presión arterial y provocan una sobrecarga del sistema cardiovascular lo que aumenta el riesgo de ataques cardíacos o accidentes cerebrovasculares. En el caso de personas con cardiopatía, los episodios de falta de oxígeno pueden provocar la muerte súbita.

A nivel social y relacional, la apnea del sueño afecta también a quienes comparte la cama o la habitación con la persona que ronca o genera preocupación con las pausas en su respiración. La falta de descanso se extiende a los demás e impacta en la vida sexual, relacional y doméstica.
